Environmentalists and animal lovers are in a race to try to save marine life covered with oil from a container ship that collided with a Bay Bridge support tower.

Oil leaked from a cargo ship that bumped the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is washing up on beaches as far as 40 miles north of San Francisco, the US Coast Guard said Thursday.

Up to 1500 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel spilled into San Francisco Bay early Wednesday after a tugboat hit a wharf that contains a refinery fuel line, the Coast Guard said.
